Scholar and Activist
I am an engaged scholar who mixes research work with community-based projects. I am the co-founder of The People's Pantry - Toronto, a food justice mutual aid project that started in 2020 to address food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, as part of my dissertation work, I started a youth-led community centre in Puerto Nuevo (Callao, Peru) that offers a range of workshops for children and youth and focuses on offering productive services, such as community programs that are at once fun and develop community organizing skills.
Social organizing and mobilization have also been a staple of my Ph.D. career. I am an active member of CUPE 3902, the local of the Canadian Union of Public Employees that represents teaching assistants, course instructors, invigilators, postdocs, among others at the University of Toronto. I have been a sociology steward, as well as an international and mobilization steward. I was also actively involved in the organizing for last Unit 1 round of bargaining in 2020.
I have worked for the Peruvian Ministry of Culture developing policy and programming for Indigenous communities, which has required working closely with Indigenous nations in what is today known as Peru. I have also worked as a consultant for government institutions doing research on education inequality and presented research results for the Ministry of Labour on employment satisfaction. My academic and community work have also been featured in the media in Peru and Canada.
I invite you to check my public engagement work and reach out if you would like my opinion or comment on any issue pertinent to my research and activism agenda.
